The Language of BlueFeeling blue: to feel sad or unhappy
Out of the blue: unexpected True blue: to be loyal or faithful Once in a blue moon: an event that occurs infrequently Blue ribbon: first place, to describe something as being of the highest quality Blue blood: an aristocrat Blue law: laws about morality issues Blue comedy: jokes about socially taboo subjects Blueprint: a detailed design of an object or idea Blue plate special: a special priced meal at a restaurant Bluestocking: a woman with strong scholarly interests Big Blue: an informal name for the computer company IBM Blue cheese: a type of cheese with blue lines in it and a strong taste+ Blue Cross: an American medical insurance company The Blue Danube: the title of an extremely popular waltz (=a type of music for dancing to), written by Johann Strauss in 1866 The Blue Nile: one of the two rivers that form the River Nile. It starts in Ethiopia in East Africa, and flows north to Khartoum in Sudan, where it joins the White Nile. The Blue Ridge Mountains: the part of the Appalachians (=a group of mountains in the eastern US) that goes from southern Pennsylvania to northern Georgia Danish blue: a type of cheese made especially in Denmark which has blue marks in it and has a strong taste Electric blue: a very bright blue colour Ice-blue: very pale blue Little Boy Blue: a character in a nursery rhyme (=an old song or poem for young children). He is a young boy who is dressed in blue and goes to sleep instead of taking care of the cows and sheep. The rhyme goes: Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn,/The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn;/But where is the boy that looks after the sheep?/He's under a haycock, fast asleep. midnight blue: a very dark blue colour Rhythm and Blues: R & B (=a type of popular music) Royal Blue: a bright deep blue colour Sky-blue: bright blue, like the colour of the sky when there are no clouds | |
